Description
"10 Muses" portrays Choonhyang, the main character of a classic love story, from a completely up to date perspective. Several cultivated traits required of Choonhyang as an accomplished lady in the original text are interpreted into 10 fantasies toward women in the modern society.
10 girls are brought out on stage in turn (including Choonhyang's mother) in white sleeveless tops, hot pants and dizzying stiletto heels instead of elegant traditional costumes, struggling to show off one by one their sexual attraction, physical beauty, intelligence, healthy body and so on. Their efforts could be easily associated with the hard training of the K-pop idol girl groups like Girls' Generation or NewJeans to achieve various skills and specialties such as singing, dancing, and rapping for the public's diverse fantasies.
These fantasies project male gazes and desires of course, but those young girls are willing to voluntarily embody such desires on their own as well. The audience, conscious of sharing the gazes and desires, will have an insight to look back upon the commercialized images of women which have been consumed objectified on a daily basis.
Decent viewers, used to just morals from classical literature, may feel uncomfortable to see sexuality explicitly revealed throughout the performance. The original text, however, is well-known for its much more obscene depictions than this.
